  1. Hello Bookeen-Team.

I just tried to update my eBook via Wifi. After Connection i get displayed that a new firmware is available, and can load this firmware. After Updating (“Loading file …” is displayed), an error message (Error # -11). “This update file is to old for your device” and the update will not be performed. I am using a Cybook Frontlight HD, bought in Germany (Thalia Book-Store)

    1. Hello Tom,
thanks for your message. I know that Thalia requested some customisation of the firmware for their store, it’s possible that the update is not compatible with this modified firmware. I am looking into it and will get back to you when I have more info.

    1. Hello WS64,
Some Odysseys do not see the firmware immediately. Make sure you have a strong enough wifi connection and give it another try. You can try connecting your Odyssey to wifi and then browsing in the bookstore for instance. You should get the “new firmware available” message even if it takes a few tries. Note that if you have a Thalia branded Odyssey, the upgrade has not yet been activated for those models, as we are waiting for final confirmation from Thalia that there is no conflict with the custom firmware we provided for them.

  2. Hi Bookeen team!
Thanks for updates, new keyboard layout looks clean and modern – good job!

Is it possible to change mechanical buttons functions in browser? Left and right are not really useful, up and down (next screen down and previous screen up) would be much more comfortable.

  3. Hello Bookeen-Team

I’m also a swiss located HD Frontlight 2012 owner … missing the update.
Since I’m bought the reader (and not really the thalia-bundling) more than 2 years ago (anyway no garantee from thalia side anymore) I do not want any “thalia”-customization.

Therefore: Could you provide us owner of such (older) hardware a possibilty to upgrade with or without “thalia”-customization ?

    regards

    1. Hello Peter,
I am honestly not sure whether it is possible for us to activate the upgrade for individual Thalia users, either for technical or for contractual reasons. However, you can contact our support directly with your request (be sure to include the serial number of your Odyssey, which you can find on a sticker on the back, or else in the home page menu under “About”), and if it’s possible I’m sure they’ll be happy to help.

  4. Bonjour !

I really appreciate the new update – the display of read being read books is a simple but great improvement!
Still, I’ve got a question: on the previous version, it was very intuitive to manage the contrast. On the new one, I can’t find this setting. Has it been removed?

    Thanks

  5. Hello.
Has anyone experience with installing not branded firmware on Thalia customised version? If hardware in both versions is the same, it could be possible to manually install older, not branded firmware and then install new firmware?

    Regards

    1. Hello Michael,
our devs tell me that it is a very bad idea to try to install earlier / unbranded firmware onto a Thalia Odyssey; there are many customisations in the Thalia firmware which will be incompatible with the unbranded version and attempting to do this could cause serious problems with your device. We will make the update available to Thalia users as soon as we have the validation from their side!
Thanks for your understanding and your patience,

If I try to turn off pressing central button it restart with the “updating…”, blu e light always on, and it remains in this state. Any suggestion to resolve this problem?

    1. Hello FM,
at the moment, the new version of the firmware is only available over the air, as we are still confirming with our partners (including Thalia) that there is no conflict with any of their custom features. This is why the firmware is not available from the start for Thalia users, for instance.

  7. Hello Bookeen Team,

is the update 6.2 still available? (I have noticed this blog post only today.)

After I connect my device (HD Frontlight, 2012) to the wifi, nothing happens.

In addition, in the downloads section of your website there is still 5.2 version – the one I have already got installed.

    Thank you for the clarification,

the update is still available! You can check manually for the update by connecting to wifi, then select menu > check for update.
Note that if you have a Thalia or other branded Odyssey, the update may not be available for you yet; Thalia Odyssey (and other branded Odyssey) uses customaised firmware, and we are waiting for them to complete their tests to verify compatibility between the new update and these features, before we activate the update for Thalia devices. This is also why the update is not available as a download from our site; only over-the-air for the moment.

I have a LEV, a distribution from Odissey for Saraiva, but it is not updating automatically. When I search for updates, it doesn’t do anything. I’m still with the 6.1 version. Could you please help me?

    Like

    1. Hello Rafael,
not to worry, your Saraiva Lev has shipped with all the new features already installed and does not need this update, which is meant for older Odyssey models to bring them up to date with our recent models. Note that updates for Cybook Odyssey may not be compatible with Saraiva Lev because this model has been customised for Saraiva, and there are differences in the hardware and the software.

unfortunately I don’t have any information about the date of availability for Thalia users; as I’ve mentioned, Thalia is testing the update to be sure it is compatible with their customisations in the original firmware, and we have to wait for their validation before we can authorise the update for these Odyssey. Very sorry not to have any more news to tell you. Hopefully Thalia will complete their tests soon and give us the all-clear, I know there are a lot of Thalia users waiting very impatiently.

  14. Hi,

it is one month since the update and still no Thalia-update.
Since Thalia seems to support only their crappy Tolino it appears there will be no update for Thalia customers. 😦

So Thalia, if there will be no update für my 2years old Frontlight, you can close your remaining shops in Germany, cause your financial crisis will not get better with this kind of behaviour.

    1. Hello Mark,
unfortunately, this update is currently only available for OTA installation because there are several branded versions of the Odyssey with customised firmware (Thalia for example), and we must wait for validation from those partners before we make it available for those devices.

The update process took more than 50 hours (with the “Updating…” message displayed all the time), but in the end the device woke up with the new firmware installed (and link to our local ebook shop persevered). So far it looks good, I especially appreciate removal of the superannoying cover “animation” when opening a book. 🙂 In any case thank you for the decision to give something to the owners of these older models too.

  16. Just a question:
Did Thalia absolutely confirm to support and validate this update?
Or…did you send it to thalia and just got a standard received message?

I am just curious…cause in Germany the thalia shop clerks in my direct vicinity did not even seem to be aware of an upcoming update….that was today.

    1. Hello bookeenuser,
I’m afraid I don’t know all the details of the arrangement with Thalia. I know that they have received the update for testing and validation, and we’re waiting for their confirmation. However I imagine that there is a specific team on Thalia’s side who is responsible for managing ebook partnerships, rather than individual Thalia shop clerks, as that would be very difficult to organise. So it doesn’t necessarily mean anything that the shop clerks aren’t aware of it. I’m very sorry I can’t give you more information, I understand your impatience and frustration, and I hope we’ll have some news for you soon.

    1. Hello Jordan,
currently this update is only available via wifi, because we are still validating the compatibility with some of our partners who have a customised version of the firmware (Thalia for example). So we can only authorize the update for devices which are using the standard firmware until our partners have confirmed there are no conflicts with any special features in their versions.

I think I find a bug in the new firmware.

When you press on library, and then the Odyssey look for a Wifi to connect, it freeze if no Wifi is present.

Yes, it’s more and more rare to be in a place with no wifi networks, but it happen.

You have to reboot by pressing the power button for 12s and then another button to get rid of this bug.

  23. I am tired of waiting for an absolutely normal update which is not approved apparently by Thalia, or cannot be programmed.

Either the engineers are absolutely incompetent people, or they don’t give a tinker’s damn about former customers.

Also I can’t understand, why Bookeen does not intervene with determination, because the decision to place on the market the e-Reader in DE and CH via Thalia was their decision.

For me one thing is very clear: once Thalia, nevermore Thalia and this maybe also for Bookeen!
