  1. Hi, will Bookeen ship the new Odyssey ereader to the U.S., from November 22nd, if purchased through Bookeen’s website? If no, are there Bookeen retail partners who may? Thanks! Chris

  2. Is there any chance you can post some live photos or movies (youtube?) of Odyssey. So far only press images are shown, but I wish I could see the real device in action. I can find only one photo so far on 3rd party blog: http://hazemiai.blogspot.com/2011/11/bookeen-cybook-odyssey-tablet.html

Since I won’t be visiting Paris anytime soon, but I am interested in ordering Odyssey via pixmania or other partner, such live photos or movies would convince me.

    By the way:
    (1) The live device shown on blog above does not have BOOKEN logo at the top of the case. Do production units have such logo? Such logo is kind of disturbance to me.

    (2) Can you please also specify in specs what exactly languages you support? You say 23 languages, but what exactly.

    (3) Can you say what kind of PDF functionality you have. I use to read PDFs on my iPad, but I would love to switch to Epaper, however functions like crop-margins, partial zooms or reflow are much appreciated then.

    (4) Do you support google books?

  3. Hello,

I am leaving from Canada to Moscow on Nov 30. If I order on the 10th of November as you have said will be possible, do you think you can get it to me by the 30th. I need to give it to someone as a Christmas present.

    1. Hello Gregory,
I *think* that should be possible, however it would depend above all on the shipping service. Please contact our support directly http://www.bookeen.com/en/supportcontact/ to ask them for more information, as I do not know the shipping times for international orders. Alternately, if you have an address in Moscow, perhaps it would be easier to have it shipped there ?

  4. Could you please define how many dictionaries will be pre-installed in Odissey?
Can the user install a dictionary of a certain language later?
One last thing: can the user write down some free hands notes?
    Thank you

    1. Hello Vladimir, thanks for your comment. We know that a lot of people are interested in larger displays and we are definitely not excluding this from our future plans. The main difficulty with larger displays is that the e-ink screens use a glass substrate which is fragile and the larger the display, the more difficult it is to protect it against torsion while still providing a device which is small and light enough to be comfortable for daily use. This will no longer be an issue once flexible plastic e-ink screens become available, of course.

  5. Thanks for your reply. The Odyssey is not showing up in the Canadian or US stores. Is this a mistake or is it going to be released at a different time (if so when?).

  6. Hi Bookeen, Thank you for your earlier reply regarding ordering internationally! But… the U.S. and Canadian stores don’t yet allow for pre-order of the Odyssey! May we order through the European store? Or will it be available soon through the North American stores? Thanks for your help! Chris

    1. Hello Chris and Bob,
thanks for your messages. The Odyssey should be available for North America within a few days; the North American launch was delayed while waiting to clear FCC approval.

  7. Félicitations, Bookeen! I’m *very* excited by this product, and have been eagerly awaiting its release for some time!

For myself, personally, it will be fantastic to have such a device. However, like Adam, above, we’re also specifically interested in the Odyssey’s facility with PDF files.

In particular, we’re considering private purchases of the Odyssey for use at an educational institution, where we need to read many PDFs — including both (1.) complex A4 (U.S. letter size) formatted document files converted to PDF, and (2.) large, image intensive, 40+ MB PDF files, averaging 340 kB per page. (These latter files are PowerPoint presentations converted to PDF for our review.) Both sets of files must be viewed/viewable in landscape orientation on the E Ink display.

The light weight, easy readability, and long battery life of the Odyssey with its 16 greyscale E Ink Pearl display will be ideal for this use — if its software and hardware can readily handle these files in an appropriate manner. (As it is, a first generation Kobo ereader takes many long seconds to turn just a single page of those lengthy presentation files, rendering it virtually unusable.)

I.) While hoping to impress, I do not want to over-hype this device to my colleagues. How well can we expect the Odyssey to perform for our PDF reading applications 1 & 2, above? (Serving the first application *well* will be sufficient, but serving both applications would be ideal!)

II.) Is there a new, “Cybook USB Power Adapter (US model)” coming for the Odyssey? And/or, is the current model listed for sale sufficient and appropriate for the Odyssey?

III.) We are in the U.S., and Odyssey pre-ordering does not appear present within the USA area of your store at this time. Should we pre-order/order from the “Outside Europe” area of your store? Or should we wait for it to appear on the USA store, with pricing in U.S. dollars?

    Merci!

    1. Hello Mark,
thanks for your enthusiastic comments! As for your questions, I can’t give you a very detailed reply here as I do not have access to a pdf file similar to yours for testing. However I should say that one of the largest problems with reading pdfs on a 6″ device is simply that the page is much larger than the screen and cannot reflow to adapt, therefore the reading experience is far from optimal, and this is true regardless of the device. However I can say that the speed of the Odyssey is certainly a huge improvement over previous generations. Whether this will be enough to compensate for the other drawbacks involved in trying to read A4 pdf on a 6″ screen is harder to say. Is it not possible for you to get access to these documents in a more suitable format, like any text format which could be converted if necessary to epub? Even an automatic conversion such as you can do with Calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/ would be preferable. I recommend you contact our support directly with your questions: http://www.bookeen.com/en/supportcontact/ they may be able to give you more technical information.

  8. @Adam : The previous model, the Cybook Orizon, is able to crop margin from PDF files and to zoom them, so this one should be able to do the same.

However, PDF is not an appropriate format for electronic books and should only be used as a fallback. Decent editors publish their books in EPUB.

    1. Hello Luca,
as I explained previously, currently Odyssey is shipped with the french dictionary Le Littré. We will add more dictionaries in future but I haven’t got a precise timeline for that.
Handwritten notes are planned however other features are higher priority so they will not be available in the immediate future.

  9. Hi,

The Odyssey looks great. I was wondering a couple of things:
    1) Does it have a note book feature?
    2) Does it have a sketch book?
    3) If it has the above can the notes and the pcitures be exported to a computer?
    4) In what ways can I transfer books to the Odyssey? Can I email them to it like the Kindle?

    Many thanks,

    1. Hello Chris,
thanks for your message. Handwritten notes are not currently supported. our dev team is working on them, however other features are higher priority, so they will not be available in the immediate future.
Sending books to the Odyssey by email is not currently supported. However you can transfer them using a card reader and micro SD card, via usb, or download them directly using the wifi connection.

    1. Hello Janine,
currently all Odysseys are shipped with the french dictionary Le Littré. We will add more dictionaries in future, but I don’t have a specific time line yet.
I’m not sure what you mean by “mesh”, are you referring to the tactile interface? If yes, then don’t worry, this is only visible when looking at the screen from an extreme angle, very close up, under very bright light coming from the side. In normal reading conditions, it’s quite invisible.

  13. Hi, can i find odyssey’s browser is good enough to handle kindle cloud reader? Also, is it possible to directly download drm protected books from online webstore such as Kobo’s and Public Library overdrive site?

    Thanks!

    Like

    1. Hello Low,
Cybook Odyssey does support Adobe drm which is used by Libraries and most major bookstores, so you should have no trouble. As for using cloud readers, I think it would be much easier to just load your books onto the Odyssey and read directly, I honestly don’t know how compatible a cloud reader would be.

  14. Hello Bookeen,

I was wondering: will be the “search in book” function added in the next future? If yes, how high is it in the priority list of the developer?
    Same for the options:
    1) Multi-line notes
    2) Freehand notes
    3) -eventually- sketch book

    Like

    1. Hello Ruskie,
thanks for your message. A search feature is indeed in development and will be added via a future upgrade. Several people have requested this so it is fairly high priority.
I will pass along the rest of your suggestions to our dev team. You can also make feature requests directly using the contact form on our site.
      Best regards,
