At last, news of the Cybook Orizon!

Yesterday I got to hold in my hands a real Cybook Orizon; after the mock-ups and prototypes it’s really exciting to see the final product really exist! We know you’ve been dying for some news and how impatient you are. So without further ado, in a world-wide sneak preview, the very first real photos (not 3D renders) of the Cybook Orizon:

Cybook Orizon Black
Cybook Orizon White

The two models have a bicolored case, with a black front and white back or the other way around.

It’s incredibly thin but really feels solid and robust, thanks to our reinforcement specifically to protect the screen. And the back of the case feels really nice to the touch; the black one has a velvety texture, and the white one has a glossy lacquer finish. The definitive dimensions are: width  4.9” (125,7mm), height 7.5” (189,49mm), and only 0.29” (7,6mm) thick, that’s incredibly thin! It weighs 8.6oz. and has a 6” screen, 600×800 pixels for a 167 dpi resolution, and 16-level greyscale.

The touchscreen is impressive: very sensitive, really fast, and since the touch layer is integrated in the screen there is no glare or distortion. There are some amazing touch features, we’ll be unveiling them soon and I think you’ll love them. First clue: I saw Google in a screen…

Not all the details are available yet but the good news is that as we get closer to launch I’ll be giving you more information right here, sometimes before it’s released anywhere else!  And in fact we’ll be saving a few other special advantages for our faithful readers…

The Cybook Orizon adventure continues next week!

    1. Hi Nate,
thanks for your comment. The Cybook Orizon shown in that video is a prototype from several months ago, so quite a few details may have changed since then. You can tell it’s an old model from the case, which is white on both sides (production models will have 2-tone cases), and of course the date of the video.

  2. Hi Bookeen Team,

any news about the availability of a SDK, or other possibility for homebrew applications on the Orizon, or on the older models?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Devon,
An SDK is definitely on our list for future release, however we currently have a few priorities ahead of it so I can’t give you a time-frame for it; it definitely won’t be available this year. We do know there is interest for it and we agree it would be a great ressource though so we are keeping that in mind. Thanks very much for your message!

    1. Hi Martin,
Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, we are unable to support .mobi drm format at the same time as any other drm format, because the Mobipocket contract includes an exclusivity clause. That is why we have so far provided an alternative firmware supporting mobipocket, since we do know that many of our users already have large libraries in mobipocket format.

The Cybook Orizon will support from-the-box epub, fb2, html, txt, for example. We know it’s inconvenient but since particularly in Europe publishers have adopted epub (the industry standard format) almost exclusively, it may be worth your while to convert your mobi books to epub (you can do this via the free library management application calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/) and switch over to this format, which is more flexible and robust, and much more future-proof.
I hope this answers your question.

  3. When I look at the Simplicimus video I think I see a different approach to the screen update (i.e. page turns). What I see is that only parts of the screen does the black-white-text. Am I imagining this? Being an engineer, I’ve yet to understand why the ugly fullpage black-white (on all ebooks) needs to occur, as you’d basically only need to clear the set pixels (and possibly some neighbours) to keep the “residual” away. Have you implemented such an approach? Is it related to this device’s eink or is it in a firmware we can expect for Cybook Opus too?

    1. Hi Fredrik,
thanks for your question. We try to optimise the screen refresh as much as possible but it is still necessary to invert the screen (black flash) to avoid ghosting, with this technology. However, a lot of people say that although they expected that to bother them, after a few minutes they don’t even notice it anymore. And I confirm this is my personal experience as well. 🙂

  4. Dear Bookeen team members
i received mail from you, but was only able to view it for a minute. my wish was to view your response later only to find out that my phone on which I had opened it deleted it after opening. My problem: the preloaded books I am able to read on bookeen, but other books bought on Exclusive books or Amazon I am not able to read on my unit, but only on my laptop. I have downloded MY DIGITAL EDITIONS SOFTWARE and am still not able to read them. Peter

    1. Hello Peter,
thanks for your message. I’m afraid I don’t know what was in the email your phone deleted so I can’t help you with that; you might want to try contacting the person you contacted the first time and explain your problem, they will probably be able to forward you their original reply.
However I can tell you, if you are talking about Kindle books bought on Amazon, you will not be able to read those in Adobe Digital Editions nor on your Cybook; Amazon does not support the industry standard format, epub, and uses instead their own proprietary format which is only compatible with Kindle. There is a solution, if you are comfortable with the technology: you will have to remove the DRM and then convert the books to epub format. A google search should help you with this. In future, to avoid compatibility problems, we recommend you verify that the book you are buying is in epub format. This should be indicated by the bookstore in the book’s details page.
      I hope this helps you.

  5. I ordered a Cybook Orizon last night. But I am already disappointed finding this news, today^^; Because I need a Mobipocket reader to read eBooks. I am not good at English. I need dictionaries to read eBooks. The Mobipocket reader help me much than others. If I cannot use the Mobipocket reader in Cybook Orizon, I have no reasen to select Cybook Orizon. EBook formats are not important for me, but I need mobipocket reader. You know?, if you bought many e-dictionaries, you can check unfamiliar word’s means easily using the e-dictionaries you bought (Popping up several dictionaries hitting the word at once). That’s the reason of why I have used mobipocket reader. I cannot live without mobipocket reader. I believe mobipocket reader is the best one for persons studying English. The Kindle will not satisfy me. Playbook and TouchPad are too far from the original OS that mobipocket supports now. I selected Cybook Orizon fascinating me, I will enjoy the gadget for a while, but I will not bring it with me until mobipocket reader come up on it.

    1. Hello Setaceau,
I understand your disappointment. We know that a lot of our readers want dictionary support. That is why we are working on a temporary dictionary solution that will function with epub format, while we are waiting for the official epub dictionary format. Hopefully this will be available soon.

Mobipocket, although it does have dictionary support, is now an obsolete format and no longer developed, based on a very old version of html, which cannot support the advanced layout possible with epub, nor many other important features. And, epub is the industry standard, agreed on by publishers and manufacturers alike, which allows for maximum compatibility and accessibility (meaning, you can buy an epub book from any bookstore, and read it on your Cybook; you are not “locked in” to one store in particular and can choose for yourself where to buy your books). So, overall, it is better for everone that Cybook supports epub, even though we know that the transition can be a bit difficult, for our readers who already have a large library in mobi format, especially dictionaries. We are doing our best to make it as painless as possible!

  6. Dear friends of Bookeen,

after many months of Bookeen Orizon use I must say that I am quite satisfied.
I have really enjoyed reading many books mainly in English.
Surfing the internet is slow but I do not mind it at all.
    The contrast is quite acceptable.

I would like to know if there have been any developments related to Cybook Horizon, particularly about the use of a dictionary in parallel with my reading.
As not any comments have been posted for a long time, I hope you haven’t quit the Orizon development.

    Yours,
    George
